You probably have a couple of people you would love to reach out to, network with and have in your circle. You do not have to attend traditional cocktail parties, conferences or seminars etc, one of the fastest ways to reach them is through their dm (whether on LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter or even WhatsApp). How do you go about this? No worries, that’s the point of this article. It contains practicable do’s and don’t about sliding into the DM. Let’s begin!

1.      Do more than salutation: Stop entering DMs with only “hi”, “hey”, some sloppy greetings and then wait for a response. No one is obliged to respond to you, so shoot this shot well. Salutation is a good start, do more.

2.      Introduce yourself: A brief introduction would do – “My name is Deborah Ariyo. A psychology graduate from Covenant University…”. Don’t bore them with your genealogy and history. Give a short relevant introduction. If you went to the same school, you might like to mention that, establish common grounds and connections. If you met before, say so “… I met you at the Stand To End Rape (STER) Seminar that held in Abuja…”. If you met at an event, try to reach out almost immediately. The sooner you reach out, the more likely they are to remember you or connect! You need every odd to be in your favour.

3.      Do your background check: Research on them. Know their areas of interest,
