Former Ghana Black Stars Captain, Asamoah Gyan popularly known as Baby Jet has shockingly revealed that he never enjoyed his 7-year tenure of the Black Stars captaincy.
According to him, unlike his former successors who took pleasure in captaining the team, it was different in his case.
Baby Jet further added that some journalists do not report the positive things he does including the charity projects but they intentionally develop controversies by publishing negative and unnecessary about him because he felt reluctant to pay a fee they usually call “soli”.
The question I always ask myself is “why is it that during my time I didn’t enjoy the captaincy?”
“I will blame journalists because they are always creating issues by setting the agenda when there is none”, he lamented.
Speaking in an interview, the prolific attacker said “I wasn’t allowed to enjoy my captaincy one bit. I needed coach Kwesi Appiah the most in the latter part of my career but he let me down.”
He stressed on his unstoppable love for the national team.
The former Sunderland striker said even scoring his 50th goal for the Black Stars journalists made an uproar out of it because his photo was on the armband when he should rather be celebrated for achieving historic attainment.
“I give my all when I’m playing for the national team because it has played a huge role in my career. I can never forget what the national jersey has done for me”, he stated.
He added that “in terms of play, I don’t think I was in the coach’s plan for this AFCON”.
“I know the coach Kwesi Appiah likes me as a human being and I like him as well but that’s how I felt during the tournament.”
Gyan has however availed himself for selection despite retiring briefly from the national team.
“As at now I’m still ready for a call up to the national team”, he explained.
Gyan believes the Black Stars has a future with the current crop of talents.
“The Black Stars have a future with this crop of players, I don’t doubt the qualities of any player”.
Asamoah Gyan succeeded defender John Mensah as the skipper of the Black Stars in 2013 under Kwesi Appiah’s first reign as coach of the side but was stripped of the captaincy a month to the AFCON 2019.
He is currently the top scorer for the Black Stars Of Ghana with over 50 goals.
